14th Curitiba International Biennial

Open Borders
Museu Oscar Niemeyer, Brazil 21.09.–21.03.2020

With the concept ‘Open Borders’ by Tereza de Arruda and Adolfo Montejo Navas, the event aims to establish reflection on the relationship between subjects and spaces. In 2019, Curitiba International Biennial of Contemporary Art enters its 14th edition and announces its curatorial concept, signed by the Brazilian Tereza de Arruda and the Spanish Adolfo Montejo Navas: ‘Open Borders’ is the theme that aligned the edition, that will happen from September 21st 2019 to March 1st 2020. The thematic proposal is a dialogue of deconstruction of the notions of physical boundaries, and the transformations they undergo over time and from the relations between subject and space. In this 14th edition, the countries members of the group BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) will be honored with a highlighted participation of contemporary artists from these countries.

Following a tradition built in previous years, this edition will occupy hundreds of spaces of Curitiba, including municipal and state museums, as well as galleries and public spaces. Curitiba public transport buses and terminals will also receive a special program from the 14th Curitiba Biennial: video-art works will be broadcast on bus and terminal televisions, aiming to take contemporary art out of traditional art spaces, sensitizing the population. Outside of Curitiba, the Biennial widens further its headquarters, with exhibitions in other cities of Paraná, as well as international exhibitions in Argentina, Paraguay, European countries such as France and Switzerland.

Tereza de Arruda (Brazil/Germany) and Adolfo Montejo Navas (Spain/Brazil) are announced the curators of the 14th Biennial of Curitiba. With the realization of a series of circuits in different venues, the Biennial will count on the careful work of a group of invited curators for the Contemporary Art program: Massimo Scaringella (Italy/Argentina), Gabriela Urtiaga (Argentina), Ernestine White-Mifetu (South Africa) and Esenija Bannan (Russia).

In Florianopolis, state of Santa Catarina (Brazil), there will be eight exhibitions with the curatorship of Juliana Crispe, Sandra Makowiecky and Francine Goudel. Adriana Almada (Argentina/Paraguay) will be Curitiba Biennial’s curator in Assunción, Paraguay, and Ticio Escobar (Paraguay), Curitiba Biennial’s curator in Rosário, Argentina. There will also be exhibitions with focus on architecture, with the curatorship of Daniel Faust (Germany/Switzerland). There is also a whole week destined to performance presentations in Curitiba, curated by Fernando Ribeiro, artist and curator specialized in performance. The Curitiba Biennial promotes a consistent Educational Project that embraces mediations in exhibition venues and guided visitations to museums, cultural centers and urban public places. Another proposal that traditionally integrates the Educational plan is the CUBIC, Curitiba Biennial University Circuit, an open call to young artists. With the curatorship of Stephanie Dahn Batista, Isadora Mattiolli and Fabrícia Jordão the young artists exhibit their works in important museums in the city of Curitiba.
